Studio Lighting with Nikon J1

Mirrorless systems have amazing benefits over DSLR however one thing they lack is the ability to do off camera flash - at least with the Nikon J1. Here is how you can get around that. This is based on my previous way to use off camera flash on a point and shoot.  The problem is there sometimes isn't any easy/convenient way to do it until I found some of these adjustable L-brackets.  They come in pairs but you'll only need on for this setup.

Pick the one with the rubbery bottom on the the shorter side and mount your camera there with the built in 1/4" knob.

Here you can see the pop up flash is lined up with the eye of the optical trigger. It's adjustable so you'll have to find out where the pop up camera flash will line up with the optical slave based on how you connect the optical trigger to the bracket and what kind of optical trigger you use.

I used 1 corner bracket and a piece or mechanics tape that I bent and 1/4 screws and nuts to attach.  You could just use the mechanics tape if you bend it right.
The bracket comes with these spinny type bolts so all you need is a 1/4" nut to attach it.

Then you just add you wireless trigger or hotshoe to pc cord or ttl cable.  Either way works.

Make sure you align the optical trigger in front of the pop up flash.  On these brackets you can adjust both the camera on the bracket as well as your mounting of the Optical trigger to do so.

This is the top view of how my setup looks like.

I will do some shots and video of this in action soon.
